The story of Pi Take any circle, measure its circumference and its diameter. The ratio of these two numbers is a mathematical constant we call pi. while this definition is simple pi has been studied for thousands of years and History of our understanding not just of the value of pi. But also, what it means forms a history of all of mathematics it takes us from the Middle East to Europe to China to India and even America. It's a history, which involves revolutions murder and the infinite. Math is as old as civilization older even. There's evidence of counting going back thirty thousand years and two of the very earliest civilizations the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians both investigated pi around 4000 years ago the Babylonians estimated PI to be 3 and 1/8. Remember that the first few digits of pi are 3.1415926. There are more, that means that the Babylonian estimate of Pi is accurate to 1% of its true value. Which is kind of astonishing when you remember that thi...
Introduction
In 1987 ,the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization consisting of all the members of the UN designed the 40th Anniversary of WHO, April 7, 1988 as World No Tobacco Day with various objective in consideration including ; educating the people around the globe about the hazardous and detrimental effects of Tobacco consumption , encouraging the governments of its member countries to make and execute policies to counter death and complications, and tackle the dangerous effects of Tobacco Consumption. To encourage people to quit smoking at least for 24 hours and make smokers believe they can actually do this. Numerous campaigns around the world aimed to educate people, especially below 25 years of age as they are most likely to get tobacco addiction. This year the WHO has announced to celebrate the World No Tobacco Day on May 31. It has various themes every year .The theme of this year was ''Commit To Quit'' ,that is, to commit to quite tobacco addiction of any kind. Commitment is indeed not an easy thing to have but if one stands as a man/woman of word and pledges to him/herself ,then its a great chance of him/her leaving an addiction. To say, the mind is behind it all. Its our subconscious that governs our actions.
The World No Tobacco Day is celebrated in the World with various themes spreading awareness and education.
Tobacco; Addiction and effects
Addiction on the whole is a very dangerous thing .The term means "A psychological and physical inability to stop consuming a chemical, drug, activity or even substance, even though it is causing psychological and physical harm. "Although others addictions like drugs, Alcohol, etc. are more dangerous but tobacco addiction is the most common addiction in the world with over 1.1 billion people addicted to it all over the world, with 275 million tobacco users in India only .Worldwide, Tobacco consumption causes nearly 8 million deaths per year with 1.2 million as a result of non smokers being exposed to second hand smoke. In India, more than 1 million people die every year due to tobacco consumption with 6 lakh non smokers or passive smokers and sadly 28 percent of which are kids. It is bad for heart as well , its said with every single cigarette you smoke, your chances of getting a heart-attack increase by 5 percent. Chronic lung disease is a very common disease in India and in fact , the third most common cause of death and predominantly its worsened by smoking. You may have seen the common warnings "Tobacco consumption causes cancer" or " smoking causes cancers " or " Tobacco consumption in injurious to health " written on every packet of cigarettes and other tobacco containing products, Despite these warnings, you may wonder why people still purchase these and that on a very large scale. The total tax revenue collection from tobacco product is more than Rs. 43000 crores annually. Cigarettes which bear the brunt of taxation in India are major revenue contributor from the Tobacco sector . This can give you a rough idea of tobacco addiction in our country.
There is no age for one to get addicted to tobacco or any such addiction .One is exposed to these addictions in the very early age, especially teens are prone to tobacco addiction. According to 2016 report of NIDA , more than 54 percent users were below the age of 25. Tobacco addiction can get you child first and then he/she may start trying other things like drugs, weed ,etc.
Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Smoking also increases risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis. Well that are quite a lot of diseases and more causes to stay away from tobacco(nicotine) addiction. In India , nearly 30 percent of the body cancers are oral cancers that are your mouth. These include jaw, tongue, lips, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses and pharynx (throat).These are life threatening if not diagnosed and treated early. However in US or Europe , only about 3 percent of cancers are oral cancers .The graph of oral cancers is so high in India due to the typical tobacco chewing habit of Indians .
WHY PEOPLE CONSUME TOBACCO AND HOW TO CHECK ADDICTION ?
One might wonder why people start smoking or chewing tobacco if it is so harmful and dangerous to health. I have summarised it down into these brief points ;
- MENTAL CAUSES : People may start consuming tobacco as many believe that it can give them some sort of mental relief or relaxation but this belief is completely wrong. You may go out for a break after working for hours and you can still feel peaceful and relieved just breathing fresh air and not smoking a cigarette.People often beleive that it releases their tension and stress while the truth is that they only feel little satiated by feeding their addiction of tobacco consumption. People suffering anxiety, stress, mental pressure, depression are more likely to get into tobacco addiction. Especially, in this time of pandemic when people all over the world are locked inside their homes ,mental issues are at their peak. So ,it's very crucial for us to talk and discuss about mental health and try to protect ourselves and people around us from such addictions and their harmful effects.Its very important for one to have a emotional support system .It can be anyone ; family , friends, guardians, teachers or even ourselves (i.e., if one is strong enough) .Talk to people around you if you are facing any such issue and listen to others and look out for eachother."Talk, listen and support". It's the way we can make it work. Stop yourselves and people around you from getting into any kind of addiction by educating yourselves and others and spreading awareness. Even if you are a smoker, this is the time when you can commit and stop smoking to protect yourselves and others .Try to maintain a good mental and physical health, and be happy.
- SOCIAL CAUSES : Socially, there are a number of reasons people may start using tobacco. PEER PRESSURE is one such cause .Young people, in colleges , schools,and hostels can start using tobacco due to pressure of their seniors, fellows in order to feel included and maybe, cool. They can be, even influenced by people older than them to start smoking for former reasons .Hookah and Cigars are some other popular tobacco products famous among teens and college students. While some start using due to these others may start smoking or chewing tobacco only as an experiment to know the feeling of such things .Out of curiosity, they may start but don't even realise until they are addicted. This is the reason why education and interaction between parents and students or teachers and students are so important in this context. I must say " Not tell them what to do is okay, but not telling them what not to do isn't.".
- OTHER CAUSES : People also choose cigarettes and other tobacco products as they are cheaper compared to others. Also, that tobacco isn't prohibited or illegal while other products like weed or drugs are illegal to buy or sell. Tobacco present in a cigarette isn't that toxic as well like Alcohol or drugs that cause intoxication. Whatsoever, even if tobacco isn't as harmful as drugs and alcohol it's addiction is still an alarming concern for us. It's harmful to us and ruins families and people.
Tobacco is indeed a taker and not a giver .It drains your money , health, mental peace, social life , family ,and hurt people around you .We need to stay away from tobacco and keep people around us away from it as well. People who are addicted must commit and stop using tobacco to protect themselves and people around them.
